new colourful, modern round rugs from interiors by element

One of the things I heard from several of you at the London Design Fair last month was that you struggle to find stylish, original round rug designs, and when I think about it, I can’t think of many people that make nice round rugs either! I’ve heard you loud and clear, and have decided to launch three additional new round rug designs online this month, ahead of my usual launch schedule.

Rather than creating a new collection for the new round rug designs, I have decided to revisit some of my past sources of inspiration and add to my current collections instead. It is always fascinating to re-visit old designs and inspirations with fresh eyes - it really makes you notice and appreciate how much you have grown as a designer.

Read on to discover the three new round rug designs and the inspirations behind them.

burst - statement floral round rug

A new addition to the Floral Explosion rug collection, the Burst round rug was inspired by a type of Dahlia called the ‘Cactus Dahlia.’ I just love the unusual, spiky petals of this flower and knew it would make a fabulous statement rug as soon as I photographed it - which is exactly what this design is, not for the faint-hearted! I also have another Dahlia-inspired rug design which you can see here - that one was inspired by a type of Dahlia called the ‘Pompom and Ball Dahlia’ (what a name!).

urchin - ocean-inspired intricate dot pattern round rug

I have long had a fascination with all sea creatures great and small, and sea urchins are no exception - I just love the intricate dot pattern you can see on their shells when the spines have fallen off. Once I realized a sea urchin shell design would make a great round rug, well, frankly I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before! Sea urchin shells come in a variety of colours - purples, browns, whites, blues - and the Urchin round rug is no exception. With five standard colourways and the possibility of countless other bespoke designs, there is a colour for you for you whether you want a statement rug or a neutral backdrop to your decor.

geode - bullseye pattern geometric round rug

A modified version of an old wallpaper design, the new Geode round rug is inspired by the striking concentric circles of a geode - which is a hollow space inside a rock that contains mineral crystals in a dazzling array of colours. The variety of colours and patterns observed in geodes is mind-boggling at times. I came across some great examples at the Natural History Museum in London that I photographed some time ago, which led to the creation of this rug. The striking bullseye pattern with an irregular, organic twist makes for a very versatile round rug that looks great in both large and small sizes.

thank you for visiting me at the london design fair

What a week! It was such an honour to exhibit alongside so many talented designers at the London Design Fair last week, not just from the UK but from all around the world. Thank you to everyone who stopped to say hello - it was a pleasure to meet so many new faces and I look forward to working with you in the future.

For those of you that couldn’t make it this time, here are some photos of the display - I was really pleased with how it all came together!

The Pond Life Round rug and Cultivate runner definitely stole the show. It seems many people are struggling to find decent round rugs and runners, so expect more of those from me in the coming months. Everyone also really loved the grooved finish that I had chosen for the Pond Life round rug on display.

The variety and calibre of design on display was almost overwhelming at times - the show has really grown over the past few years. It was hard to find time to have a proper look around as I didn’t want to be away from my stand for too long, but here are some of my top picks that I spotted on my brief breaks from stand duty:

ruiqi dai

These bold ceramics from Ruiqi Dai were just stunning - such beautiful colour combinations and a refreshing change from white or patterned ceramic pieces which we have all grown accustomed to seeing.

blankture

I only spotted these shadow casters from Blankture just as the show was closing, and I’m very glad I did. You put them above the bulb on a lighting pendant to create beautiful shadows in your space. I love the way they use organic, abstract forms as inspiration for beautiful patterns - much like my rugs.

my friend paco

Can you guess which of these quirky cushions from My Friend Paco was my favourite? Obviously the grumpy cat! But I really liked them all as they were refreshingly different from all the geometric textile patterns on display, and thus more memorable. These guys were exhibiting quite close to me so I could be amused by the grumpy cat all day long.

yuta segawa

Yuta Segawa’s display of miniature ceramic pots in a rainbow of colours was really intriguing. I could see a row of these looking beautiful lined up on a sunny windowsill, perhaps with a few little plants coming out of them as well?

refunk'd

Fortunately I didn’t have to go very far to see this gorgeous industrial furniture as Refunk’d was the stand right next to me. Ursh creates all her furniture in her workshop near the Lake District, which is one of my favourite places. Her pieces all had a distinct personality and I could also see them being very usable in many different types of spaces.

Until next time! If you missed me this time, remember to sign up to my newsletter so you can be the first to know where and when I will be exhibiting again.

two weeks to go until the london design fair

The anticipation to the London Design Fair is building up - can you feel the excitement? In addition to showcasing the Lost in Space collection, I will be presenting a selection of my newest round rugs and hallway runners, which were released earlier this year. Below I reveal which rugs I will be bringing to the show for you to see…

1. saturn's rings rug

Saturn’s Rings is a versatile diagonal stripe rug with a twist - the lone circle represents Saturn’s Mimas moon orbiting in front of the planet’s elegant rings. It will be shown as part of the Lost in Space collection display.

2. pond life round rug

The cheerful Pond Life print has always been a firm favourite as both a wallpaper and rectangular rug, and the round rug is no exception. It will be on display for the first time at the London Design Fair this year.

3. palm frond rug

The Palm Frond rug has been a firm favourite for a few years now, so I couldn’t resist making a spot for it on my stand at the London Design Fair. The warm, rich 'Rust' colourway is perfect for cool, crisp Autumn days.

4. cultivate hallway runner

Cultivate is one of three colourful, geometric hallway runners that I offer. It is available in both blue and violet colourways, with the blue one on display at the London Design Fair.

You can find me at the London Design Fair from Sept 21-24 on stand E22 on the first floor. For all details about the venue and opening hours please visit their website at www.londondesignfair.co.uk

behind the scenes - under the sea rug and wallpaper collection

These long, hot summer days have got everyone going to (or dreaming about) the seaside, so what better time to shine a spotlight on the Under the Sea collection? The underwater world has always been a huge fascination for me and an endless source of inspiration. I recently fulfilled a long-held ambition to learn to scuba dive which means that I can now finally seek out underwater inspiration in person rather than from books, which has been really exciting for me! Here I divulge the often seldom-seen natural phenomena that have inspired my Under the Sea ocean-inspired rug and wallpaper collection.

labyrinth shaped rug

I have been seeing images of brain coral in books and magazines like National Geographic for many years, so I was really excited to spot some fairly sizeable pieces of it in person on one of my first ever dives. It was a great starting point for my graphic Labyrinth rug. The maze is one of the most common recurring shapes in nature, and also features in my logo.

kelp forest

The Kelp Forest rug was inspired by the towering kelp forests that can be found in cooler waters such as the Pacific Northwest. I discovered these at the Toronto aquarium and would love to see them in person one day. This relaxed, versatile rug is a great fit for a cool, modern bedroom or living space.

star coral shaped rug

I remember finding fragments of this coral washed up ashore when I lived in Kuwait as a child (oh, to live five minutes away from a beach again!) Nevertheless, I was still amazed to see much, bigger pieces of it still alive underwater on many of my recent dives abroad. It has been the inspiration behind my Star Coral shaped statement rug, as well as a few other pieces - namely the Star Coral and Coral Atoll wallpapers.

seaweed knots rug

Most people generally find seaweed boring and/or a nuisance, however, I found the unusual circular pattern on strands of bladderwrack seaweed interesting enough to turn into the elegant, modern Seaweed Knots rug design. If it wasn’t for the name, I imagine seaweed would be the last thing you think of when you look at it.

coral atoll rug

Mushroom coral is probably my favourite coral (doesn’t everyone have a favourite coral? What, just me?) It is such a spectacular, intricate form that really makes a big impact. I would just love to have it in my living room in the form of the Coral Atoll statement rug. Ocean is my favourite standard colourway of this rug, but it is versatile enough to work in any number of custom colourways – visit the bespoke rugs page for more information.
